One of the best parts of choosing Vets to Pets is that your pet never has to leave home for expert care. But did you know that Fear Free® care actually starts before we even arrive?
As the first practice to complete the soon to be released Fear Free Certified Veterinary Practice – House Call Standards program, our approach is deeply rooted in reducing stress from start to finish. But we’re not doing it alone—you’re a key part of the team!
Here are a few simple ways you can help your pet feel calm, confident, and prepared for a positive at-home visit.
1. Set the Scene: Create a Calm Space
Choose a quiet, comfortable area where your pet already feels relaxed. A cozy living room, a familiar corner with a blanket, or even your bed can be a great place for us to work.
Before we arrive, keep things low-key:
- Avoid loud music or household commotion
- Close windows if there’s outside noise
- Separate other pets if they may cause distraction or stress
2. Use Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals (If Recommended)
If your pet tends to be very anxious, we may recommend pre-visit pharmaceuticals (PVPs)—safe, short-acting medications or calming supplements that help take the edge off.
These don’t fully sedate your pet—they simply reduce fear so your pet can have a more positive experience. Think of it like anti-anxiety medication for a human dentist visit!
If we prescribe PVPs, follow the dosage instructions and give the medication before our scheduled time. It can make a big difference.
3. Skip the Meal—Bring the Treats!
Unless your pet has a medical condition that requires regular feeding, consider skipping a meal before our visit. A slightly hungry pet is more likely to respond positively to treats, which we use throughout the appointment for positive reinforcement.
Please have your pet’s favorite treats nearby—we love to incorporate them! This helps your pet associate our visit with good things.
4. Confidence for Cats
If we’re seeing your cat and you use a carrier to keep them safe before we arrive, make sure it’s a place they feel good about.
Here’s how to create a carrier-positive experience:
- Keep the carrier out and accessible well before the visit
- Line it with a cozy towel or blanket
- Spray Feliway™ pheromone spray inside about 15–20 minutes ahead of time
- Drop a few treats or toys inside to make it inviting
5. Stay Calm—They Feel What You Feel
Pets are incredibly tuned in to our emotions. If you’re nervous, rushed, or worried, they’ll pick up on it.
Take a few deep breaths before we arrive, keep your tone upbeat, and trust that you’re doing the best thing for your pet.
We’re here to make this visit as easy on you as it is on your furry friend.
Your Support = Less Stress, Better Health
The beauty of Fear Free® house call care is that we’re working together to create a calm experience from the moment the appointment is booked. By setting the stage at home, you’re giving your pet the best chance to have a relaxed, positive visit—and to feel good about future ones.
